Messenger Next is free, independent, and built around the Messenger account you already use. Here is what that means in practical terms.
Free means free.
No price tag, subscription, advertising, or paid tier. Messenger Next was made by one developer who missed a focused, Messenger-only desktop experience.
Developer's promise: the core Messenger Next desktop app will remain free to download and use. Access to conversations will not be placed behind a subscription, and advertising will not be added to the app.
Do I need a new account?
No. Use the Facebook account you already use in Messenger on your phone or on the web. Messenger Next does not create a separate identity, profile, or contact list.
Is this an official Meta app?
No. Messenger Next is an independent, unofficial desktop wrapper with no affiliation, endorsement, or partnership with Meta.
It does not imitate or replace Meta's service. It loads the real
Messenger interface from facebook.com/messages in a
dedicated Tauri window. Authentication happens on Meta's own
interface, not through a login form operated by the developer.
Why can an unofficial app still be safe to use?
The app uses the operating system's WebView and opens Meta's own Messenger page. Messenger Next does not ask you to send a password to the developer and does not operate a separate message server.
Releases are published through the public Messenger repository, and the Team page documents the developer's public identity instead of presenting an anonymous brand. No software can promise absolute safety, so the project documents its boundaries openly.
Is it safe to use?
Messenger Next adds no telemetry of its own and does not collect, analyze, sell, or store messages, credentials, or usage analytics. External links bypass selected Facebook tracking redirects.
Messenger itself is still a Meta service. Meta may process account and conversation data under its own terms and privacy policy. Read the privacy and trust guide for the full boundary.
Do voice and video calls work?
Yes. Voice and video calls, group chats, reactions, photos, and normal Messenger features work through the full Messenger interface, subject to Messenger availability and microphone or camera permissions on your operating system.
Which operating systems are supported?
Messenger Next provides native packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The download section presents the primary installer for each platform, while the installation guide lists additional package-manager and Linux distribution options.
Why are Feed, Reels, and Marketplace missing?
That is intentional. Messenger Next is designed as a conversation-focused desktop application, so it removes unrelated Facebook surfaces and keeps Messenger at the center of the window.
Does Messenger Next work offline?
No. Messenger Next displays Meta's live Messenger service. Signing in, loading conversations, sending messages, receiving notifications, and making calls require an internet connection.
How are updates installed?
Press F2 to open the Updates panel. It checks the selected release channel and guides you through installing an available signed update. Checks are deduplicated and cached to avoid unnecessary GitHub requests.
Can I try preview releases?
Yes. Preview updates are an optional setting in the F2 panel. Enabling them requires confirmation because these builds may be less stable and are intended for people willing to test changes and share useful feedback.
Where can I find downloaded files?
Press Ctrl + J to open the Downloads panel. Select a completed download to open it, or use Ctrl-click to reveal its containing folder.
What should I do if a release causes a problem?
Open the problem-reporting flow from the Updates panel. You can ask the community, report a reproducible issue, or review an available rollback option when returning to an earlier supported release is appropriate.
Where can I report a problem or suggest an improvement?
Use GitHub Discussions for questions, ideas, and experience reports. Open a GitHub issue for a reproducible defect, including your operating system, Messenger Next version, and steps that demonstrate the problem.
